Looking something else up led to finding this recommendation at www.W3C.org about using the image alt attribute and text links adjacent to each other
The section also goes on to mention image vs. text links and usability issues.
What’s interesting to ponder is how the effect of combining the alt attribute and anchor text of adjacent links will affect keyword density and whether the keyword “anchor text” will be considered a text link or alt text in scoring for search engine placement, when the combined method is used.
